LEYENDA
In 1987, at Berklee College of Music in Boston, a diverse group of musicians—including Setsu Fujii (Japan), Waldo Chavez (El Salvador), Desmar Guevara, Raúl Romero, and Alberto Toro (Puerto Rico), Juan Solares (Dominican Republic), and Emiliano Marentes (Mexico)—formed Ojorojo. Influenced by jazz greats like Mingus and Irakere, they crafted a fusion of Latin jazz and progressive styles. Their musical journey began in the practice rooms of Berklee, evolving into mesmerizing performances at local cafes. As their Berklee days ended, the members dispersed, carrying Ojorojo’s spirit with them.
In 2019, a joyous reunion in New York City reignited the band’s flame. Despite global lockdowns in 2020, virtual connections kept their passion alive. In 2023, after 32 years, Ojorojo reunited in Mexico City at Noviembre Studios. There, joined by Latin Grammy-winning engineer Rodolfo Vazquez and producer Xavier López, a friend and former classmate, they recorded Ojorojo: EXPEDITION—a testament to their enduring creativity and friendship. The album blends jazz, Latin, Afro-Caribbean rhythms, and funk, celebrating resilience and camaraderie. Ojorojo: Expedition embodies the timeless spirit of exploration and friendship, resonating with every note of their remarkable journey.
